SUMMARY:Institutionalizing Change
DESCRIPTION:Institutionalizing Change is both the capstone and the conclusion of the yearlong discussion of race\, immigration\, and inequality that has been the focus of the Sawyer seminar series\, Natives and Nativists\, Immigrants and Migrants in an American City. \nThe goal of this final seminar is to have a frank conversation on how to turn scholarly insights into institutional action and create community consensus on immigration and educational access for the greater Newark community. It features a roundtable discussion with eminent leaders\, migration scholars\, and advocates on how to institutionalize that change\, starting with the institutions of Newark. \nGuiding questions for this seminar include: \n\nWhat is the philosophy that guides university policy around undocumented students/faculty/staff?\nHow is that policy influenced by leading migration scholarship\, or is it shaped by other influences and considerations?\nWhat are the challenges\, priorities in institutionalizing a pro-migrant policy at a leading American university in the current political climate?\n\nPanelists \nNancy Cantor\, Chancellor\, Rutgers University\, Newark\nRoberto Gonzales\, Founder and Director\, Penn Migration Initiative\, University of Pennsylvania\nJason Hernandez\, Rutgers Immigrant Community Assistance Project\nPeter T. Rosario\, President and CEO\, La Casa de Don Pedro\nModerator: Kornel Chang\, Associate Professor\, History\, Rutgers University\, Newark \nSchedule \n9:30 AM – 10:00 AM Breakfast\n10:00 AM – 11:30 AM Panel\n11:30 AM – 12:00 PM Poetry and Jazz Video Presentation\n12:00 PM – 2:00 PM Lunch

DESCRIPTION:Co-organizers:\nKim DaCosta Holton\, Associate Professor\, Spanish and Portuguese\, Rutgers University\, Newark\nTim Raphael\, Professor\, Arts\, Culture\, and Media\, Rutgers University\, Newark\nMayte Green-Mercado\, Associate Professor\, History\, Rutgers University\, Newark \nCo-sponsored by Mediterranean Displacements Project\, Institute for the Study of Global Racial Justice\, and Center for Migration and the Global City \nScholarship on migration and displacement focuses mostly on the conditions that force people to leave their places of origin or the challenges that people face during their departure or arrival. In this sense\, academic research on migration tends to reproduce particular frameworks shared across the disciplines of demography\, sociology\, political science\, economics\, and history. Relatively absent from these discussions are artistic expressions. By bringing together scholars and performers\, this seminar examines the intersections between migration and the arts to consider questions about the role of music\, dance\, and performance in articulating displaced identities in urban migrations\, how literary and visual arts can evoke memories of war\, or how the culture of cities has been formed and transformed by global migration. It will also consider how aesthetic vocabularies are maintained and repurposed in adopted homelands\, and how expressive culture impacts processes and perceptions of belonging and alienation in both origin and host contexts. \nWednesday\, November 16\, 2022 \n3:00-5:00 pm\nAlexandra Vázquez\, Associate Professor\, Performance Studies\, New York University\nYona Stamatis\, Associate Professor\, Ethnomusicology\, University of Illinois Springfield\nDaniel Da Silva\, Assistant Professor\, Spanish and Portuguese\, Rutgers University\, New Brunswick\nAmir ElSaffar\, Musician/Composer

SUMMARY:Politics Across Borders: Immigration\, Nativism\, Activism and Trans-Border Political Sentiment
DESCRIPTION:In the context of the scapegoating of immigrants and intensified nativism in US politics\, it is often taken for granted by scholars and journalists that members of immigrant communities in the US would automatically reject such politics. However\, many immigrants hold seemingly contradictory political positions\, informed by multi-national political and economic trends that complicate this simple picture. This seminar examines the complexity of political sentiment and action among some immigrant communities in the Newark area and beyond. It concludes with a roundtable involving panelists and progressive activists from Brazilian communities in the region. \n(10:00-11:30 am) The Global Right Across Borders \n \nHindu Supremacists in a White World\nAudrey Truschke\, Rutgers University\, Newark \nBolsonaristas in the US: 2018 and 2022\nVânia Penha-Lopes\, Bloomfield College \nThe Anti-Democratic Wave in Brazil\nIsabela Kalil\, University of São Paulo \n(1:00-2:30 pm) Immigrant Communities and Global Politics \n \nIndian American Political Activism\nPrema Ann Kurien\, Syracuse University \nPolitical Opinions of Brazilians living in the United States\nGladys Mitchell-Walthour\, North Carolina Central University \nThe Construction of Hinduphobia in the UK\nMeena Dhanda\, University of Wolverhampton \n(3:00-4:30 pm) Roundtable: Transnational Solidarity Politics: Reflections by Organizers \n \nEduardo Vianna\, City University of New York and organizer\, formerly with Defend Democracy in Brazil and BRADO \nNatalia de Campos\, Performance artist and activist\, Defend Democracy in Brazil Committee\, NY \nIn conversation with the panelists\nModerator: Sean T.
